Say farewell to Hamlet, and say hello to his fellow Play Yard 2 player, Hogan!  Hogan is one jet-powered little cockapoo!  He can hardly wait to get through the gates and get the play time started.  He’s not a very big dog, but he’s in constant motion at Camp.  Hogan moves from one playmate to the next as they need a breather (although Abigail and Krystal can give him a run for his money), and he bounces through every inch of play yard and climbs every centimeter of the ramp.  As you can see from the header, he even finds time to enjoy splashing in the pup pools.  We always know it’s going to be an active group of Littles when we see Hogan trotting through halls!

In Memory of Derby

Recently Derby, one of our senior campers, had to cross the rainbow bridge and leave the rest of us behind.  I’d like to take a minute to share a little bit about this sweet boy, so everyone will know how much he is missed.

Give Morty’s cute little ears a farewell rub, and prepare to spend a week with Hamlet!  Hamlet is living proof that good things come in small packages.  He’s a silky sweet boy who is happy to love on any counselor who steps into play yard 2, and at first glance you might think he’s a lover, not a player.  Right up until he steps outside and turns into the canine cross between David Beckham and Pele! Hamlet is one ball-loving pup, and it’s a blast to watch him get the other dogs interested in a rousing game of dog-soccer :)   We’re always happy to see this sweet Cavalier bounce down aisles to the littles’ playgroup!

Can you recognize a Pit Bull?

Those of us who work at Camp Bow Wow see lots of different dogs, and we get pretty good at guessing a dog’s breed (or mixture of breeds) just from a quick look.

That’s why I was surprised that it took me 6 tries to click on the actual American Pit Bull Terrier in this article from Being Stray.  Apparently my eye thinks that Pits are larger and shorter-muzzled than the breed standard—I was fooled by the Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, and some different bulldogs.

This may just show that historically, different people have had a reason to create breeds of powerful, strong-jawed dogs who fall into the same visual class as Pit Bulls do . . . but there are also pictures of a Labrador Retriever, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a Vizsla, and a Catahoula Leopard Dog in this test.  Are there really people out there confusing those breeds with Pits and Bulldogs?

Take the test and let us know how you do!  Any surprises?

Spooooky Halloween dogs . . . or is that “adorable”?

We do enjoy Halloween at Camp Bow Wow, and if the dogs don’t come in with costumes, sometimes they need a little help to get into the holiday spirit :)   Please enjoy the costume fashion show from last Friday, starring the pups at CBW Greenville

Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

November is Adopt-A-Senior-Pet month!

When some people think of adding a pet to their family, they just assume they should look for a puppy or a kitten.  They don’t know what they’re missing!  Seniors might be as young as 6 years old,  and they often have plenty of life in them.  And it’s a life without the surprises that young animals may spring on you.

When you adopt a senior, you already how big they’re going to get, and their personalities are already formed.  If you’re lucky, they’re already potty trained, and they have usually outgrown that super-active (and sometimes super-destructive) period.  Plus, they’ve seen how hard life can be, and they are sooooo grateful just to have a home and family of their own.

Don’t take my word for it . . . hear it from some experts at our local Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue, from Senior Mutt Match out of San Diego, and from  Santuary for Senior Dogs in Ohio.

Can’t adopt right now?  You can still help . . . how about sponsoring a senior dog (or pet) at a local rescue?  How about donating to a sanctuary that specializes in seniors?

Do you have a story about adopting a senior dog?  Please share!

Say “so long” to LeeLoo, and prepare to spend a week with Morty!  We met Morty when he was a little guy, and even though he’s grown up, he’s still just as cute.  He’s a happy boy who loves to play hard with everyone in the medium group (although he does think LeeLoo is especially nice), and when he needs a break from the running & pouncing, you can often find him lounging in the pool.  In fact, his mom tells us that if she lets Morty know he’s coming to Camp, he likes to wait near the door until it happens–even if he has to wait overnight!  Morty is a real sweetheart, and we always love the chance to scratch him behind those adorable  ears :)

Old pics with dogs

So, while wandering around on the internet I found a blog devoted to old postcards and photos including dogs.  It’s fun (I think) to look at the old clothes & the types of dogs people chose, so check out Old Dog Photos.

Say goodbye to Charlie and prepare to spend the week with Leeloo!  She’s a soft and sleek girl, and she knows how have a good time.  Leeloo is taking lessons with Miss Julie, and she’s growing up before our eyes, but that doesn’t keep her from being one of the social butterflies of Play Yard 3!  It’s always fun to watch Leeloo play with her near-twin Brody, or lead a 10-dog  game of chase.  Despite her busy social calendar, she’s never too busy to get a little lovin’ from a Counselor.  We’re always happy to watch Leeloo dart into the play yard :)
